WP1: Project Management

The management of the project is performed by the project coordinator, TU DELFT, that is legally and financially responsible for the project’s implementation. The administrative coordination is handled by a dedicated project coordination team at TU DELFT, while the technical coordination is performed by the scientific coordinator of TU DELFT. For each WP, a WP Leader is assigned to ensure efficient management, monitoring and evaluation.

WP2: Re-designing the supply chain of water and minerals in the multi-company site of the Energy Port and Petrochemical cluster in Botlek area

This Work Package involves the large-scale demonstration of the ZERO BRINE project. The demonstration will be implemented in the Demineralized Water Plant (DWP)which is owned by EVIDES in the Botlek area of Rotterdam Port. The DWP consists of a combination of ion exchange and membrane technology: Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) àCationic Exchange resin àReverse Osmosis àMixed Bed Ion Exchange. For both brine streams that are generated in this process, a circular economy solution is being developed.

WP3: Minimising energy consumption and increase resource recovery yields through advanced treatment methods in the coal mine and textile industries

This work package aims to demonstrate circular economy solutions in two process industry sectors—namely coal mining and textile industries—at pilot-scale through innovative brine treatment.

– Coal mine pilot: Decrease the energy consumption by 50% compared to the energy consumption of a reverse osmosis-vapour compression system which represents current best practice.

– Textile pilot: Utilisation of the recovered concentrated salt solution for the dyeing process baths or external valorisation for other industrial sectors (such as leather salting)

WP4: Promoting circular economy in the chemical sector: an innovative approach to recover resources from wastewater generated in the silica industry

This work package is dedicated to demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of implementing a circular economy scheme in the precipitated silica industry to recover water, sodium sulphate, waste heat, acids and alkalis with the following objectives:

  • To demonstrate the technical feasibility of using recovered nanofiltration (NF) membranes for concentrating effluents with high salinity.
  • To evaluate eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) and multi-effect distillation (MED) technologies to crystallize Na2SO4 from concentrated effluents
  • To demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of a waste heat recovery system (WHRS) to reduce energy requirements of the circular economy scheme
  • To demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBP) to recover NaOH and H2SO4 from silica industry effluents

WP5: Optimisation of innovative technologies – Integration of bench-scale and optimized pilot systems into fully-equipped Brine Excellence Centers (BECs)– Development of technology libraries (software tool) and integration into a common platform.

This work package refurbishes and upgrades innovative brine treatment pilot systems developed in previous EU- and national-funded projects, in view of ZERO BRINE objectives. We are developing 5 Brine Excellence Centers (BECs)– one main BEC in the Netherlands and four satellite BECs in Spain, Greece, Italy and Poland – that will serve as fully-equipped facilities where companies will be able to test the equipment with their real wastewater and be provided with customized, validated brine treatment solutions. Technology libraries are being developed – software tools integrated into a common platform. These will simulate the key technologies used in the treatment trains, providing therefore credible results of expected operational data, as well as economic feasibility.

WP6: Online Brine Platform – Application of the software for the case of the Netherlands

During this work package an Online Brine Platformwill be developed that will result in:

  • Increased customer traction for the Brine Consortium of technology suppliers (WP8)
  • Providing effective brine treatment solutions to process industries (problem owners)
  • Linking problem owners to end-users, promoting resource efficiency and circular economy concepts (WP8) as well as facilitate and ensure the extensive knowledge exchange and dialogue between key stakeholders.

The aim is to develop a knowledge-based service i.e. the Online Brine Platform, that will promote, demonstrate and advance Industrial Symbiosis in Europe and worldwide. The software will be applied for the case of Netherlands, one of the most industrialized region in Europe, with a scope to promote/disseminate the example in the rest of Europe (WP10).

WP7: Evaluation of ZERO BRINE systems sustainability performance

Throughout this work package the results from the project demonstration activities will be evaluated and assessed. Based on an assessment of technical performance of innovative ZERO BRINE systems certain suggestions for the implementation of the prototype, brine treatment system at full-scale will be provided. The objective is to evaluate the environmental benefits, the social benefits and the economic feasibility of the innovative ZERO BRINE systems and the Life Cycle Sustainability Analysisof the ZERO BRINE applications.

WP8: Business plan/market exploitation and replication/ Intellectual Property Management

The aim of this work package is to elaborate three strategic business plans for the industrial sectors examined in the demonstration activities of the project. Furthermore, it addresses the intellectual property rights produced within the project implementation and prepares a Memorandum of Understanding between the stakeholders of Botlek area in Rotterdam Port.

WP9: Innovation Deal / Policy review

This work package is developing an Innovation Deal that will address legislative barriers for the market uptake of the ZERO BRINE methods (including End-of-waste criteria, REACH regulation). It examines the relevant BREFs and provides suggestions for the update the Best Available Technology to the European Commission. Furthermore, it develops minimum quality standards (requirements) for salt reuse in different applications (end-markets) and assesses the environmental impacts associated with brine discharge.

WP10: Dissemination & Communication

Zero Brine Kick off 6 or 7

Work package 10 communicates and disseminates the ZERO BRINE project and results. Based on a coherent strategy, an online platform and communication tools for effective dissemination and engagement is developed to disseminate and communicate the main findings of the project and to support partners in communicating and disseminating their work. Field visits to the pilot demonstration projects for various target groups, such as journalists, policy, and students are organised to help visualize and show the sustainable process being implemented. Key stakeholder groups along the whole supply chain are involved through ongoing engagement and informed about the project.
